Sonat and I have been dancing together for quite a while now. After some trouble mainly due to taking it way too seriously in the beginning, it has been a lot of fun in the past weeks. Unfortunately, Sonat’s ankle is badly bruised from a dance accident last Wednesday. That won’t stop us from going dancing again soon.
Going to the same place every Wednesday night to get in a few Swing and
Charleston moves has given our week kind of a jour fixe for dancing.
Even though we take classes with our amazing dance instructor
Christiane Görner as well, “free range“ dancing is a completely
different terrain. It is not just about practicing what you have
learned, but also about enjoying yourself. As I have mentioned above,
this is a tough task when you are just starting out. However, at some
point you just stop caring and start dancing.
That is the moment when
it starts being fun and you start trying different dance moves.
In addition, the crowd at these dance evenings is not your usual
Berliners. We have gotten to know this elderly gentleman who shows up
every Wednesday Ballhaus Mitte in (East-)Berlin dressed up in one of
his outfits from the 1920s. It is worth going there just to see him
dancing. It is one of the great aspects of this place. Some are dressed
up like in a movie and others wear regular clothes, which doesn’t
necessarily hamper their dance performance. I should mention that not
everyone goes there for dancing either, they have great pizza and if
you just want to listen to some music that is fine as well.
